He is active in the community, having served on the Metropolitan Nashville Planning Commission and the Regional Transit Authority and as Chairman of the Metropolitan Nashville Parks and Recreation board of directors. Mr. Smith served as National Finance Co-Chair for Senator Lamar Alexander’s presidential campaigns in 1996 and 2000, and he achieved Super Ranger status in President George W. Bush’s 2004 campaign. He was National Finance Chairman for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist’s leadership political action committee, VOLPAC, served as Finance Chairman for Senator Lamar Alexander’s 2008 and 2014 re-election campaigns, and is currently the Finance Chairman for Senator Alexander’s leadership political action committee, TENNPAC. In addition he has served on the boards of the FHLB and Franklin Road Academy, and as director of the First Union National Bank community board. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University. He serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Middle Tennessee State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree.
